چکیده

A classical result of Khinchin says that for almost all real numbers α, the geometric mean of the first n digits ai(α) in the continued fraction expansion of α converges to a number K ≈ 2.6854520 . . . (Khinchin’s constant) as n → ∞. On the other hand, for almost all α, the arithmetic mean of the first n continued fraction digits ai(α) approaches infinity as n → ∞. There is a sequence of refinements of the AM-GM inequality, Maclaurin’s inequalities, relating the 1/kth powers of the kth elementary symmetric means of n numbers for 1 ≤ k ≤ n. On the left end (when k = n) we have the geometric mean, and on the right end (k = 1) we have the arithmetic mean. We analyze what happens to the means of continued fraction digits of a typical real number in the limit as one moves f(n) steps away from either extreme. We prove sufficient conditions on f(n) to ensure divergence when one moves f(n) steps away from the arithmetic mean and convergence when one moves f(n) steps away from the geometric mean. We show for almost all α and appropriate k as a function of n that S(α, n, k) is on the order of log(n/k). For typical α we conjecture the behavior for f(n) = cn, 0 < c < 1. We also study the limiting behavior of such means for quadratic irrational α, providing rigorous results, as well as numerically supported conjectures. CONTENTS

Hausdorff dimension of real numbers with bounded digit averages

This paper considers numeration schemes, defined in terms of dynamical systems and studies the set of reals which obey some constraints on their digits. In this general setting, (almost) all sets have zero Lebesgue measure, even though the nature of the constraints and the numeration schemes are very different. Sets of zero measure appear in many areas of science, and Hausdorff dimension has sh...

Large Deviation Asymptotics for Continued Fraction Expansions

We study large deviation asymptotics for processes defined in terms of continued fraction digits. We use the continued fraction digit sum process to define a stopping time and derive a joint large deviation asymptotic for the upper and lower fluctuation process. Also a large deviation asymptotic for single digits is given.

The Statistics of the Continued Fraction Digit Sum

The statistics of the digits of a continued fraction, also known as partial quotients, have been studied at least since the time of Gauss. The usual measure m on the open interval (0, 1) gives a probability space U . Let ak, k ≥ 1 be integer-valued random variables which take α ∈ (0, 1) to the k partial quotient or digit in the continued fraction expansion α = 1/(a1 + 1/(a2 + · · · )). Let Sr =...

Duke’s Theorem and Continued Fractions

For uniformly chosen random α ∈ [0, 1], it is known the probability the nth digit of the continued-fraction expansion, [α]n converges to the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution P([α]n = k) ≈ log2(1 + 1/k(k + 2)) as n → ∞. In this paper, we show the continued fraction digits of √ d, which are eventually periodic, also converge to the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution as d → ∞ with bounded class number, h(d). The ...

Dimension of Some Non - normal Continued Fraction Sets

We consider certain sets of non-normal continued fractions for which the asymptotic frequencies of digit strings oscillate in one or other ways. The Hausdorff dimensions of these sets are shown to be the same value 1/2 as long as they are non-empty. An outstanding example of such sets is the set of “extremely non-normal continued fractions” which was previously conjectured to be of Hausdorff di...
